Berlin, Germany - Exploring an Open, Edgy, Diverse City

Earlier this month, we headed to Berlin on a trip that later included Israel and Greece for a total of close to 6 weeks, to visit my close friend and wellness travel experience partner, Rivka, and see her home country together. As this was my second time in this cool, quiet, and unique city, I’ve finally put together a travel map of all the great spots to check out, where to dine, and also grab a great cup of coffee.

Bridge over the Spree

During my last two trips to this diverse city, we ended up enjoying many delicious spots and parts of the experience, so I wanted to share them. If you want to pull up the travel map on Google directly, you can also see it all right here!

Food & Drink

Aromas CafeFriendly service and a decent cup of coffee for a great price.
The Barn RoasteryAnother solid coffee option in the city.Choose from a multitude of whole beans to take home, or stop by on your walk in the neighbourhood and grab your fave coffee option.
Boothaus CafeA lovely little neighbourhood cafe, this place was located nearly across the street from where I was staying.
Aromi e SaporiTruffle Pasta - Aromi e SaporiAn authentic and cozy Italian restaurant, serving delicious home-cooked dishes, Lamb Chops - Aromi e Saporiwith a great wine list.
Cafe Neue LiebeMore great coffee!
Coffee Star Origins & BlendsAlways busy, this corner cafe serves a decent cup of coffee with great people watching from the outdoor seats.
Dada FalafelDada Falafel Meat Tasting PlatterA very  popular spot, the platters are quite filling and options are inexpensive. There are definitely other similar options in the city that have better food, but this is a solid falafel option for this neighbourhood.
GodshotGodshot Flat WhiteExcellent coffee, but also, one of the best chocolate croissants I’ve had in the world. Make sure you go early before they run out! This ended up being my absolute favourite cafe, both times I visited Berlin.
No Fire No GloryEggs Benedict - No Fire No Glory This great restaurant has an amazing selection of breakfast options. On the pricier side for the city, you’re guaranteed to find something you like, and the coffee is also recommended.
MontRaw RestaurantCocktails at MontRaw RestaurantA delicious restaurant with a Michelin-starred chef at the helm. Friendly service, delicious cocktails and Burrata at MontRawwine list, and incredibly balanced flavours in a cool room.
UmamiA mainly Vietnamese restaurant, but also offers dishes from other Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Cambodia. Umami offers a great tea menu, along with many soups, that can be served in their cozy inside seating, or on picnic table style benches outside, in a lively corner opposite the Water Tower Park
Hallmann und KleePancakes at Hallman and KleeA delicious brunch resto, everything from the avocado toast to the coffee and tea Roast Beef Toast Hallman und Kleehit the spot. Try the pancakes, eggs benedict, and the roast beef toast.

Accommodations

Prenzlauerberg NeighbourhoodWasserturn BerlinAs I stayed with my friend both times in Berlin, I don’t have any suggested accommodations where I stayed myself. There are plenty of nice airbnbs available, though, in the Prenzlauerberg neighbourhood, which I really enjoyed. It was very close to Mitte with all it’s sites, Alexanderplatz, and also transit was convenient to anywhere we wanted to go. It was also filled with a ton of great restaurants, cafes, shops, and bars that you could stumble to from anywhere within the area.

Sites & Activities

Alternative Berlin ToursAlternate Berlin Tour GraffitiThere is a free walking tour that leaves from Alexanderplatz – just walk up and you’ll get setup with a group. The guides operate on tips, and are very knowledgeable hosts of the city. Our guide was excellent – I would bet he is actually heavily involved in Berlin’s street art scene – not only based on his expertise on the subject. You’ll spend a few hours walking around the city in unique areas, learning multiple neighbourhoods, history, and on the Ubon. We ended up at a cool spot along the river for drinks and food – from here you can continue on socializing with the group.
Berlin Cathedral ChurchBerliner DomeAlso known as the Berliner Dom, the Cathedral is located in an area filled with museums of all kinds.
Brandenburg GateBrandenburg Gate BerlinDuring my first visit to Berlin, we visited this historic gate during the annual Light Festival, where artists displayed their creations against various monuments and sites around the city.
East Side GalleryEast Side Gallery ArtA must-see when in Berlin, the East Side Gallery showcases one section of theCars at East Side Gallery Wall, with many well-known art pieces. This is also located along the Spree River, and is about 1.5 km long.
German Museum of TechnologyMuseum of Technology Berlin, CamperA very large and cool museum, we actually didn’t even explore it to it’s fullest. Spending the afternoon there, we didn’t realize we were in the building that only housed the smaller portion of the collection (cars and technology through the ages), and then moved over to the main building for our last half an hour, where you could see all the boats and airplanes in their massive glory displayed.
Reichstag BuildingIn Front of the ReichstagThe location of the German parliament, which was burned down on February 27, 1933 and then restored. It is still in use today. The roof terrace and dome can be visited by the public, and offers views of the parliamentary and government district and Berlin’s sights.
Wochenmarkt KollwitzplatzSaturday Market The Saturday market on Kollwitzplatz offers a large array of vendors selling their wares, from delicious food, candy, flowers, jewelry, coffee, and more. Stop by for a lunch time currywurst and chips with a glass of wine or German beer while shopping for fresh produce.
Victory Column – Angel of PeaceFrom the Victory Column Angel of Peace BerlinClimb the column to see a 360 degree view of Berlin. There is a park surrounding the column where you can take a break between sites.

Spree River Berlin
As I continue to jog my memory of more of my favourite spots from the city, I’ll add to this list. There are many more places I really enjoyed, so if you’re heading to the city and have any questions, feel free to reach out!
